For three trialing seasons in a row, we’ve loved these compact deep-burgundy red heads. Averaging 3 lb, it’s easy to chop a whole cabbage for a single recipe or a small batch of kraut. If you want even smaller heads, you can plant these tight for mini-head production. Excellent raw, cooked or fermented. In good storage they’ll keep till March. Alert! Heading brassicas in the Northeast are seeing consistent damage from swede midge, a tiny gall midge. Its effects result in a non-heading plant. Wire hoops and row cover at early stages of heading brassica crops are becoming crucial for success. Some research also suggests garlic sprays as a possible organic repellent.
