American Summer Pearmain Apple

×
scionwood
This is a twig for grafting. Summer. Among the oldest known American apple varieties, before 1806. In his classic pomological reference book Old Southern Apples, Creighton Lee Calhoun proposes that it originated in New Jersey, but its parentage is unknown.

Medium-sized round fruit is yellowish-green with purple-red blush and crimson or orange stripes. A fine fresh eating apple that bruises easily and doesn’t keep long, but the tender aromatic yellow flesh melts in your mouth. Ripens over about 4 weeks in late August to September. Said to make the best dried apple rings! Z4.
